Slip Resistance of Tiles: Why You Should Test Before You Install

A tile spec sheet says a floor is safe. That number was almost certainly measured in a lab, on a brand-new sample tile, under conditions that have nothing to do with your building. We’ve walked into more than one freshly finished lobby, tested the slip resistance of tiles already on the floor, and watched a “safe” datasheet number turn into a documented failure that same afternoon. The tile hadn’t changed. The conditions had.
A failed slip test after a floor is grouted, sealed, and open for business is an expensive problem — torn-up tile, a delayed opening, a dispute with the installer over whose spec sheet was wrong. Almost all of it is avoidable. The same DCOF and pendulum testing that catches a bad floor after the fact catches it just as easily before a single box of tile ships.
What Slip Resistance of Tiles Actually Measures
Under ANSI A137.1, Section 6.2.2.1.10, the coefficient-of-friction number on a tile datasheet is an evaluation of the surface under known, controlled conditions using a standardized sensor. It’s a useful way to compare tiles against each other. It is not a prediction of whether any specific person will slip on that floor. The standard says so directly: shoe sole material and wear, the type and amount of contaminant on the floor, stride length and speed, whether the surface is level or inclined, and how the floor is cleaned and maintained all affect the actual risk. The coefficient of friction is one input, not the whole answer.
That’s exactly why the industry doesn’t leave the number floating. ANSI A326.3 sets a minimum wet dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) for each way a floor is actually used: a minimum wet DCOF of 0.42 for interior level floors that can get wet; 0.50 for interior “wet-plus” spaces like locker rooms and indoor pool decks; and 0.55 for exterior wet areas and floors exposed to oils and greases. A tile can carry a real, honestly measured DCOF number and still be the wrong choice for where you’re planning to put it.
How a Tile Actually Gets Tested for Slip Resistance
The wet DCOF test itself is more rigorous than most owners assume. Under ANSI A137.1, Section 9.6, the tile is tested with a BOT-3000E device fitted with an SBR rubber sensor, dragged across the surface while it’s wetted with a dilute 0.05% sodium lauryl sulfate solution — a stand-in for the thin soapy film a real floor picks up. Before any tile is tested, the sensor is resurfaced on fine silicon-carbide sandpaper and checked against a reference tile; testing only proceeds once that check reading lands in a tight band, and the sensor gets re-verified afterward to confirm nothing drifted. Four measurements are averaged per tile, across three tiles of the same finish.
Pendulum testing (ASTM E303) is the gold standard for assessing slip resistance. The BOT-3000E is useful for monitoring changes in a surface over time, or for comparing one surface to another — before and after a treatment, or one area of a floor against another. In an ASTM E303-22 pendulum test, a spring-loaded rubber slider swings down and sweeps across the wetted tile at a speed close to a human heel strike, and the energy the slider loses to friction is read as a Pendulum Test Value, or PTV in the pedestrian-safety world, on a 0-to-150 scale. The standard calls for the slider to be conditioned on 60-grit silicon-carbide cloth, a contact path between 124 and 127 millimeters, and five recorded swings per surface.
Why the Number on the Box Isn’t the Number on Your Floor
ANSI A137.1’s own six-laboratory interlaboratory study is the clearest evidence that “porcelain” isn’t a slip-resistance rating. Polished porcelain averaged 0.36 wet DCOF. A smooth glazed porcelain or ceramic tile averaged as low as 0.24 to 0.27. A lightly or heavily textured glazed porcelain landed at 0.43 to 0.44 — right at the interior-wet line. Unglazed mosaics and textured unglazed porcelain reached 0.63 to 0.65. Every one of those numbers came from the same lab study, using the same method, on tiles that a showroom would happily describe with the same word: porcelain.
Several of those finishes sit below, or barely above, the 0.42 interior-wet minimum. The finish decides the number, not the material name on the order form. A specifier who buys “porcelain tile” without pinning down the actual surface finish is choosing somewhere between a comfortable pass and an outright failure, and the datasheet alone won’t tell you which.
A Coating Can Raise the Number — Or Lower It
A coating, sealer, or finish change can move a floor’s slip resistance in either direction. The only way to know which way it moved on your floor is to measure it. Under ANSI/NFSI B101.3, a wet DCOF of 0.45 or higher on a level surface counts as high traction, 0.30 to 0.44 is acceptable, and anything under 0.30 needs attention.
Test the Slip Resistance of Tiles Before You Buy
A few habits catch most of the problem before it becomes an expensive one. Ask the supplier for PTV or wet DCOF data on the specific finish you’re ordering, not a similar-looking tile from the same product line. Treat that number as a starting point rather than a guarantee, because the tile you install will pick up grout haze and cleaning residue that a lab sample never sees. And build re-testing into the maintenance plan — ANSI A137.1 notes directly that a tile’s coefficient of friction changes over time with wear and surface contaminants, so a number that was true at handover won’t necessarily stay true.
A pre-installation sample test, run to ASTM E303 for pendulum PTV or ANSI A326.3 for wet DCOF, tells you where a candidate tile actually lands before a single box ships. It’s a small, predictable cost against tearing out and replacing a floor that failed at handover.
