A tile that sails through in a hotel lobby can be a serious problem on the pool deck forty feet away. Same tile, same box, same number printed on the spec sheet. What changes is where you put it, and that is precisely what the DCOF requirements in ANSI A326.3 are built to sort out. Owners get tripped up because they hear “0.42” once and treat it like a pass/fail line for the whole building. It isn’t. The standard sets five different targets for five different situations, and knowing which one applies to a given floor is the difference between a defensible surface and one you’ll be explaining to a claims adjuster.

Falls are not a small line item. The CDC puts the cost of fall injuries at about $361 billion a year, tied to roughly nine million emergency-room visits, close to a million hospitalizations, and about 44,000 deaths. Around 65,000 slip-and-fall lawsuits are filed annually. A wet floor with the wrong tile is one of the most predictable, and most measurable, ways a building ends up in those numbers.

Here’s how the DCOF requirements actually work, and how to read them for your own space.

What DCOF measures, and what it doesn’t

DCOF stands for dynamic coefficient of friction. Per ANSI A326.3-2021, it’s the ratio of the force needed to keep one surface sliding across another to the weight pressing them together. In plain terms, it’s a number for how much grip a floor gives a moving foot. “Dynamic” matters: it measures friction while things are already in motion, which is what’s happening the instant a heel starts to slide. Contaminants change the reading, so water, soap, and grease all pull the number down from where a clean dry floor would sit.

One thing the standard is careful to say, and we’ll repeat it because it keeps people out of trouble: a DCOF value is a controlled comparison of surfaces. The introduction to A326.3 states plainly that it does not predict whether any particular person will or won’t slip. Stride length, footwear, how the floor is maintained, drainage, and the contaminant all feed into a real fall. The number is a tool for choosing and monitoring floors. It is not a guarantee, and no honest tester will sell it as one.

Worth clearing up while we’re here: these targets are not OSHA or ADA numbers. Neither agency sets an enforceable numeric coefficient of friction for walking surfaces. ANSI A326.3 is a voluntary consensus standard published through the Tile Council of North America, and it has become the working benchmark for hard-surface flooring in North America because it’s repeatable and it’s written down.

Why there are five DCOF requirements instead of one

A restroom, a commercial kitchen, and a covered lobby are not the same problem. One sees intermittent splashes, one sees grease baked into a hot floor all day, and one is supposed to stay dry. Holding all three to a single number would either overbuild the lobby or leave the kitchen dangerously under-specified.

So A326.3 sorts hard-surface flooring into five product-use categories, and each carries its own DCOF requirement plus expectations for texture and drainage. Table 1 of the standard lays them out. Three of the five (the wetter, harder-service ones) are what the standard calls manufacturer-declared categories: the maker classifies the product using its own data and the criteria in the standard, and the standard’s guidance sets the DCOF floor each class should reach. The practical takeaway for an owner is simpler than the paperwork. Match the floor to the category, then check the number.

The five DCOF requirements, category by category

All of the wet values below are measured on the BOT-3000E, the tribometer A326.3 is written around, using a 0.05% sodium-lauryl-sulfate water solution that stands in for a real-world soapy film.

Interior Dry (ID): the dry-service category, with no wet DCOF minimum attached. For floors meant to stay dry, level, and clean: hotel lobbies, offices, showrooms, indoor malls outside the food court. Note this one is tested dry. A glossy tile can be perfectly appropriate here as long as water is kept off it, which is why walk-off matting at the entrances matters so much for this class.

Interior Wet (IW) — 0.42 wet DCOF. For interiors that stay mostly dry but catch water now and then: entry foyers, public restrooms without showers, grocery stores, the dining room of a restaurant with a closed kitchen, home-style kitchens and baths. This is the 0.42 number most people have heard. It’s the baseline for a level interior floor expected to be walked on when wet with water.

Interior Wet Plus (IW+) — 0.50 wet DCOF. For interiors that see standing water regularly: showers, indoor pool decks, locker rooms, steam rooms, the front-of-house of an open-kitchen or quick-service restaurant. A326.3 treats this as a manufacturer-declared class, and its guidance is that a floor here should reach at least 0.50 wet DCOF and bring texture and drainage to help shed water.

Exterior Wet (EW) — 0.55 wet DCOF. For level outdoor areas walked on when wet: patios, walkways, sidewalks, and exterior pool decks. The standard’s guidance puts the floor at 0.55 or better wet, with an aggressive enough texture to break through the water film outdoors. (This rating is about traction, not frost resistance, which is a separate question.)

Oils/Greases (O/G) — 0.55 wet DCOF. For floors that live with oil, grease, and fats: the back-of-house of a kitchen with grills or fryers, and areas exposed to automotive fluids. Grease is a nastier contaminant than water because it doesn’t squeeze out from under a shoe as fast, so this class calls for 0.55 or better plus a pronounced texture, and it demands the most disciplined cleaning of any category.

A pattern falls out of that list. As a floor gets wetter and greasier, the required number climbs and the demand for real surface texture and drainage climbs with it. And the higher-traction categories are exactly the ones the standard warns will need more frequent, more thorough cleaning to keep performing.

A passing number is only the starting point

Two floors can both read 0.55 and behave differently in service, because the DCOF requirement is one factor among several the standard tells specifiers to weigh: traffic, expected contaminants, maintenance, wear, drainage, and how the surface is structured. A meaningful catch lives in that last one. Deeply textured or three-dimensionally patterned tile can drain beautifully and grip well underfoot while producing a misleading measured DCOF, because the test device catches on the profile. A326.3 flags this directly. It’s one reason the wetter categories lean on the manufacturer’s declaration and real-world texture rather than a lab number alone.

There’s also a plain truth the tile industry states outright, and we’ll borrow it: there is no such thing as a slip-proof floor, only a slip-resistant one. The goal is to put the right slip-resistant surface in the right place and keep it that way.

How the number gets measured

The BOT-3000E is an automated drag-sled tribometer. It runs itself across a wetted path at a fixed speed and load, takes four readings per sample in crossing directions, and averages them, with a validation surface checked before and after so the results are traceable. Because it’s operator-independent and repeatable, it’s well suited to what most owners actually need: confirming a floor as installed, comparing one area or product against another, and monitoring the same surface over time to catch when maintenance or wear has quietly dropped the traction.

For assessing slip resistance under wet conditions more broadly, pendulum testing under ASTM E303 is the international gold standard, and it reports a different metric, the Pendulum Test Value (PTV), on a different scale. The two methods answer related but distinct questions, and a defensible program often uses each where it’s strongest. What you should never do is convert one into the other or mix a DCOF number and a PTV number as if they were interchangeable. They aren’t.

What this means for a South Florida building

Down here the categories aren’t academic. Afternoon storms wet exterior walkways and drag water into every foyer through the summer. Pool decks and locker rooms run wet for months. Restaurant kitchens fight grease year-round. A surface specified as Interior Dry and installed at a pool gate isn’t a paperwork error, it’s a foreseeable hazard, and after a fall that mismatch is the first thing a good plaintiff’s expert will find.

The fix is not complicated. Know which of the five categories each floor belongs to, confirm the surface actually meets that DCOF requirement as it sits today, and keep a record. A tile’s rating when it left the factory tells you what it was capable of. It doesn’t tell you what a mopped, worn, greased floor is doing right now. Only a field measurement does that.
