Audit that Saves you Money Most of the hazards we find on audits were sitting in plain sight for weeks before anyone slipped. Regular floor safety audits catch those problems early, cut your liability, and keep you compliant with safety regulations. A few reasons to put them on the calendar: Why Regular Floor Safety Audits…
One Little Number That’s Caused a Lot of Confusion You might’ve heard that a floor is “safe” if it has a slip resistance of 0.50. That number shows up in court cases, on cleaning products, and in safety manuals. But here’s the thing: that number is severely outdated. It came from a test done in…
The Real Meaning of Slip Probability Every slip starts with a mismatch between how much grip a person needs to walk and how much grip the floor actually provides. Measuring that mismatch is at the heart of tribology, the science of friction, and tribometer friction testing, the method used to quantify it. A friction number…
When you design or specify athletic flooring, slip resistance sits alongside shock absorption and ball bounce as a property you have to get right. Get it wrong and players slide or catch a foot. For multi-purpose indoor sports floors, ASTM F2772 is the specification most people work from. Here is what it says about slip…
ASTM D2047 is one of the oldest slip tests still on the books. It was first published in 1953 and uses the James Machine to measure the static coefficient of friction (SCOF) of a clean, dry floor coated with wax or polish. It answers one narrow question: how much grip there is before a shoe…
Children fall. It comes with learning to walk, and most of the time a small bump is nothing to worry about. But some slips lead to real injuries, and those are worth preventing. I’m a father to three young, energetic boys, and at Walkway Management we spend our days helping schools and families lower the…
SCOF vs. DCOF: Choosing the Right Slip Resistance Test Two acronyms come up constantly in floor safety: SCOF and DCOF. At Walkway Management, we believe it’s time to set the record straight and explain which method really protects people (and property) from slip-and-fall incidents. SCOF: The Static Relic Static Coefficient of Friction (SCOF) is the…
Are you at risk? When it comes to maintaining a safe and secure environment for your business, understanding the slip potential of your floors is crucial. Slip-and-fall accidents are one of the leading causes of workplace injuries and can result in costly lawsuits. To mitigate these risks, it’s essential to evaluate and manage the slip…
Pendulum Slip Tester Slip Resistance Test Methods: ASTM E303-22, EN 16165, AS 4663, and others. Endorsed by the Ceramic Tile Institute of America (CTIOA). Validation for Pedestrian Traction: Validated by Greater London Council Bulletins 43 (1971) and 145 (1985), in continuous use since 1971, and adopted by over 50 nations.
