Gloss testing — the early

A rising gloss reading is often the first measurable sign that maintenance is polishing a floor toward slippery. We measure specular gloss to a recognized standard and read it alongside your slip data.

What is gloss testing?

Gloss testing measures a surface’s sheen: how much light it reflects specularly. We use a calibrated gloss meter under ASTM D523, the standard test method for specular gloss. Results are reported in Gloss Units (GU) at standardized angles (commonly 20°, 60° and 85°), giving an objective, repeatable number for a floor’s finish.

Why gloss matters for floor safety

Gloss is not a slip-resistance measurement, and any company that tells you a shiny floor is automatically a dangerous one is oversimplifying. But gloss is a powerful indicator. Burnishing and over-polishing raise gloss by smoothing down the microscopic surface texture, the same texture (asperities) that gives a floor wet traction. When gloss climbs over successive maintenance cycles, it’s often the earliest sign that a cleaning program is quietly polishing a floor toward slippery, long before a slip complaint appears.

Gloss, slip and roughness — the full picture

We read gloss alongside slip-resistance testing and surface roughness testing. Together they tell the complete story: slip testing says how much traction the floor has, roughness says whether the texture that provides it is intact, and gloss flags when maintenance is trending the surface in the wrong direction. Together, the three readings tell you what one alone can’t.

Common questions

Does high gloss always mean a slippery floor?

No. Gloss is an indicator, not a slip measurement. A high-gloss floor can still be slip-resistant, and a matte floor can be slick. That’s why we pair gloss with actual slip testing.
